Aircraft Overview

The Sikorsky HH-3E “Jolly Green Giant” was a long-range combat search and rescue (CSAR) helicopter operated by the United States Air Force from the 1960s through the 1990s. Based on the SH-3 Sea King airframe, the HH-3E was heavily modified for inland rescue missions deep into hostile territory—most notably during the Vietnam War.

Outfitted with self-sealing fuel tanks, titanium armor plating, a rescue hoist, and in-flight refueling capability, the HH-3E could insert into dangerous zones, extract downed pilots, and return under fire. Its side-mounted miniguns and rugged twin-turbine engine design gave it both firepower and reliability in the most hostile environments.

The Jolly Green Giant gained iconic status during the Vietnam War, where it flew hundreds of missions under the motto: “That Others May Live.” The helicopter’s crews demonstrated extraordinary heroism, often braving enemy fire to rescue airmen stranded behind enemy lines. In recognition of their bravery, numerous HH-3E crews were awarded Silver Stars, Distinguished Flying Crosses, and in rare cases, the Medal of Honor.

Beyond Vietnam, the HH-3E continued serving in rescue and special operations roles until it was eventually replaced by the HH-60 Pave Hawk in the 1990s. Despite its retirement, the legacy of the Jolly Green Giant remains deeply respected in the rescue community.

The name “Jolly Green” lives on in Air Force pararescue and CSAR culture, symbolizing selfless courage and relentless determination. This flag pays tribute to that legacy with bold imagery—ideal for display by veterans, rotorcraft enthusiasts, and those who still live by the creed of saving lives under fire.
