Aircraft Overview

The HH-60 Pave Hawk is a twin-engine, highly modified variant of the UH-60 Black Hawk, designed specifically for combat search and rescue (CSAR) missions in support of the United States Air Force. Since its introduction in the late 1980s, the Pave Hawk has served as the go-to aircraft for retrieving isolated personnel, recovering downed pilots, and performing medevac under hostile conditions.

What sets the HH-60 apart is its enhanced mission suite, which includes forward-looking infrared (FLIR), integrated GPS/INS navigation, night vision goggle compatibility, and secure communications systems. Its side-mounted aerial refueling probe allows for in-flight refueling, extending its reach on long-range missions. The aircraft also features armor protection and mounts for two crew-served weapons—usually 7.62mm miniguns or .50 caliber machine guns—for defensive firepower during extractions.

The HH-60 has played critical roles in military operations from Desert Storm to Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Often operating in the dead of night or under fire, these helicopters and their crews exemplify the Air Force’s rescue motto: “That Others May Live.” The Pave Hawk is also a mainstay in domestic disaster relief and humanitarian aid efforts, providing a rapid-response capability when lives are on the line.

The aircraft is flown by highly trained crews, often working alongside pararescue jumpers (PJs), and is revered for its ability to reach inaccessible terrain, hover in extreme conditions, and get in and out fast. With a reputation built on life-saving missions, the HH-60 remains one of the most respected rotorcraft in the U.S. military arsenal.

This side-profile shadow flag captures the sleek, mission-ready stance of the Pave Hawk in minimalist form—ideal for display by veterans, active crew, or anyone who honors the legacy of American combat rescue.
