Boeing 767 Aircraft Overview

The Boeing 767 is a widebody twinjet airliner developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes, first entering service in 1982 with United Airlines. Designed to fill the gap between the smaller Boeing 757 and the larger 747, the 767 became one of the most versatile and widely used aircraft in commercial aviation history.

The aircraft was initially conceived in the late 1970s as airlines sought more fuel-efficient jets capable of flying medium to long-haul routes. The 767 featured advanced aerodynamics for its time, a two-crew glass cockpit, and efficient turbofan engines, making it one of the first truly modern widebody jets. It was offered in multiple variants, including the 767-200, 767-300, and the extended-range 767-300ER, which became the most popular version. Later, the 767-400ER was introduced with a stretched fuselage and updated features.

Airlines worldwide adopted the Boeing 767 for its flexibility. It could serve dense domestic routes while also flying transatlantic journeys under ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) regulations. In fact, the 767 became one of the first twinjets approved for long overwater flights, changing the economics of international travel.

Beyond passenger service, the Boeing 767 also became a successful freighter. Cargo operators such as UPS and FedEx embraced the 767F for its range, reliability, and payload capabilities. The aircraft was further adapted into specialized roles, including the KC-46 Pegasus aerial refueling tanker developed for the U.S. Air Force, showing its versatility in both civilian and military applications.

The 767’s cabin was designed for comfort, with a twin-aisle layout that typically seated 181 to 375 passengers, depending on the configuration. Its wide fuselage allowed for flexible seating arrangements and cargo space, making it ideal for both leisure and business travelers.

As of today, the Boeing 767 remains in widespread use, particularly in cargo operations and select passenger fleets. More than 1,200 units have been delivered, and the aircraft continues to be an essential part of global aviation.

The Boeing 767’s legacy lies in its ability to connect continents, pioneer twin-engine long-haul operations, and remain a trusted workhorse for both airlines and cargo carriers. Its role in shaping modern air travel ensures its place as one of Boeing’s most significant achievements.
