The Lockheed C-141B Starlifter was a pivotal asset in U.S. military airlift operations from the 1960s through the early 2000s. Initially introduced as the C-141A in 1965, the aircraft was designed to meet the Air Force’s growing need for strategic cargo transport across global theaters. The C-141B variant, introduced in the late 1970s, added an extended fuselage (a 23.3-foot “plug”) and in-flight refueling capability, greatly enhancing its range and payload capacity. With its high-mounted swept wings, four Pratt & Whitney TF33 turbofan engines, and a rear-loading ramp, the C-141B could quickly deliver troops, equipment, and humanitarian aid nearly anywhere on the planet. During its operational life, it served in Vietnam, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, humanitarian relief efforts, and countless peacetime missions. The Starlifter was among the first jet-powered transport aircraft to offer the speed and reliability that revolutionized air mobility. Though retired in 2006 and replaced by the C-17 Globemaster III, its impact on global mobility operations remains unmatched in its era.
