Bell Helicopter responded with the Model 204, which first flew on October 20, 1956. This prototype, designated XH-40, was powered by a Lycoming YT53-L-1 turboshaft engine producing 700 shp (520 kW). The Army placed an initial order for 100 HU-1A helicopters in March 1960. The designation “HU-1” led to the nickname “Huey,” which became widely adopted. Early models faced power limitations, prompting Bell to develop variants with more powerful engines. By 1966, the Lycoming T53-L-13 engine, capable of 1,400 shp (1,000 kW), was being installed on some models.
