Aircraft Overview

The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk is a versatile, twin-engine utility helicopter that has served as the backbone of U.S. Army aviation since its introduction in 1979. Developed as a replacement for the UH-1 Iroquois (Huey), the Black Hawk was designed to offer improved survivability, greater lift capacity, and enhanced performance across a wide range of missions.

Capable of transporting up to 11 troops with equipment or carrying external loads of over 9,000 pounds, the UH-60 excels in air assault, medevac, resupply, command and control, and search and rescue roles. Its rugged construction, crashworthy design, and powerful General Electric T700 engines make it reliable in the most demanding combat environments—from dense jungles to high-altitude mountain ranges.

Over the decades, the Black Hawk has been deployed in nearly every major U.S. conflict, including Grenada, Panama, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond. Specialized variants like the HH-60M (medevac), MH-60L/M (special operations), and the Navy’s SH-60 Seahawk adaptation further extend the platform’s capabilities across all branches of the military.

With over 4,000 aircraft built and in service with more than two dozen countries, the Black Hawk is one of the most recognizable helicopters in the world. Its legacy is defined not only by its combat effectiveness but by its life-saving medevac missions and its dependability under fire.

The UH-60 remains in active production and continues to evolve with modern avionics, upgraded engines, and digital systems. It’s expected to serve well into the 2030s alongside the Army’s new Future Vertical Lift platforms.

This full-color flag captures the Black Hawk in vivid detail—a perfect tribute for crew members, maintainers, veterans, and anyone who respects the rotor-wing lifeline of U.S. ground forces.
