Aircraft History: MQ-1C Gray Eagle UAV
The MQ-1C Gray Eagle is an advanced medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed for the United States Army. Based on the battle-proven MQ-1 Predator platform, the Gray Eagle has been tailored specifically for Army operations, providing enhanced surveillance, reconnaissance, and strike capabilities in a variety of combat environments. It was developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems under the Extended Range/Multi-Purpose (ER/MP) UAV program.
First introduced in 2009, the MQ-1C is larger and more capable than its predecessor. It features a 56-foot wingspan, a maximum takeoff weight of 3,600 pounds, and can carry a mix of payloads including electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and up to four AGM-114 Hellfire missiles. The aircraft is powered by a Thielert Centurion diesel engine, which allows it to fly for over 25 hours at altitudes up to 29,000 feet.
A key element of the Gray Eagle’s effectiveness is its integration into the Army’s tactical command structure. Unlike Air Force-operated UAVs, the MQ-1C is fully interoperable with Army ground units, giving brigade commanders real-time intelligence and strike capability without relying on external support. The aircraft can be operated from remote ground control stations or fly autonomously using pre-programmed missions.
Gray Eagles have seen extensive use in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other theaters where persistent ISR and rapid-response firepower are critical. The MQ-1C continues to evolve with upgrades like the “Gray Eagle Extended Range” variant, which increases endurance and payload options.
As a cornerstone of Army aviation modernization, the MQ-1C Gray Eagle embodies the shift toward multi-domain operations and unmanned battlefield dominance.
