The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) began operating the F/A-18 Hornet in the late 1980s as a replacement for the aging Mirage III fleet. Selected for its versatility, the F/A-18A/B Hornet provided the RAAF with a capable multi-role platform, adept at both air-to-air combat and ground attack missions. Australia procured 75 Hornets, which were assembled locally by Aerospace Technologies of Australia (ASTA) under license from McDonnell Douglas (now part of Boeing). The aircraft formed the backbone of RAAF fighter capability for more than three decades.
RAAF Hornets served in No. 3, No. 75, and No. 77 Squadrons, providing air defense, tactical strike, and training roles from bases such as RAAF Tindal and RAAF Williamtown. Notably, they saw combat deployment as part of the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq and Syria during Operation Okra, conducting precision airstrikes against ISIS targets and supporting ground forces.
The Hornet’s rugged design, high maneuverability, and advanced avionics made it ideal for the vast and remote environments of Australian airspace. It was frequently featured in airshows and joint exercises like Pitch Black and Talisman Sabre, solidifying its role in coalition interoperability and regional security.
By the 2020s, the classic Hornets began retirement, replaced by the more advanced F-35A Lightning II stealth fighter. Some aircraft were sold to Canada and private military contractors, while others were preserved in museums or returned to Australia for static display.
The legacy of the RAAF Hornet endures—not only as a symbol of Australia’s defense readiness but as a testament to its long-standing alliance with the United States and NATO partners. For generations of pilots and maintainers, the Hornet represents a defining era in Australian airpower and aviation excellence.
