The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range, subsonic, jet-powered strategic bomber that has served as a key pillar of the United States Air Force’s strategic bomber fleet since the 1950s. First introduced in 1955, the B-52 was originally designed to carry nuclear weapons during the Cold War. However, its versatility, payload capacity, and durability quickly made it essential for conventional missions as well.

Powered by eight Pratt & Whitney turbofan engines and featuring a unique swept-wing design, the B-52 can fly at altitudes of up to 50,000 feet and has an unrefueled range of over 8,800 miles. It can carry up to 70,000 pounds of ordnance, including a wide variety of bombs, mines, and missiles. The aircraft’s size, endurance, and adaptability have earned it legendary status among military aircraft.

Throughout its operational history, the B-52 has seen combat in multiple major conflicts, including Vietnam, the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, and the Iraq War. Despite being over 70 years old, the B-52 remains in active service, with continuous upgrades keeping it relevant in the 21st century. The B-52H model, the latest in the line, is expected to serve into the 2050s, thanks to ongoing modernization efforts including new engines, radar systems, and digital avionics.

Nicknamed the “BUFF” (Big Ugly Fat Fellow), the B-52 symbolizes both the technological prowess and the strategic endurance of the U.S. Air Force. Its combination of range, payload, and global reach has made it a cornerstone of American airpower for generations.
