Aircraft History

The Boeing B-47 Stratojet was a groundbreaking strategic bomber developed in the late 1940s for the United States Air Force. Designed to penetrate Soviet airspace at high subsonic speeds and deliver nuclear payloads, it represented a massive leap forward in aviation technology with its swept-wing design, jet propulsion, and aerial refueling capability.

First flown in 1947 and entering service in 1951, the B-47E was the most produced and most refined version of the Stratojet. It was powered by six General Electric J47 turbojet engines mounted in pairs under each wing and near the fuselage. Its thin wings and tandem landing gear configuration allowed it to achieve high-speed, high-altitude flight—crucial for avoiding enemy interceptors and surface-to-air threats of the era.

Though eventually overshadowed by larger bombers like the B-52, the B-47E played a vital role in Strategic Air Command (SAC) operations throughout the 1950s and into the early 1960s. At its peak, over 1,500 B-47s were in service, forming the backbone of America’s nuclear deterrent during the earliest and most volatile years of the Cold War.

In addition to its bombing role, the B-47E also contributed to reconnaissance and weather missions. It helped shape aerial combat strategy and directly influenced later bomber and tanker designs, including the KC-135 Stratotanker and the B-52 Stratofortress.

Retired by the mid-1960s, the B-47E remains a symbol of American engineering innovation and Cold War readiness. Its legacy lives on in the strategic doctrine and aircraft that followed.
