Aircraft Overview

The Lockheed AC-130J Ghostrider is the most advanced and heavily armed variant in the legendary AC-130 gunship lineage. Developed as a successor to the AC-130U Spooky and AC-130W Stinger II, the Ghostrider brings enhanced firepower, speed, and survivability to U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) missions. Built on the C-130J Super Hercules airframe, the AC-130J combines the rugged versatility of a transport aircraft with devastating close air support capabilities.

What sets the AC-130J apart is its integrated weapon systems, which typically include a 30mm GAU-23/A autocannon, 105mm M102 howitzer, and precision-guided munitions such as GBAU-39 Small Diameter Bombs (SDBs) and AGM-176 Griffin missiles. Its modern avionics, sensor suite, and modular open systems architecture give the Ghostrider a lethal edge during low-visibility and nighttime operations—often referred to as “bringing the storm” when ground troops call for help.

Designed specifically for precision strike, armed reconnaissance, and air interdiction, the Ghostrider offers unparalleled support to special operations forces on the ground. Its ability to loiter for extended periods while delivering accurate firepower has made it a critical asset in modern conflicts.

The AC-130J achieved initial operational capability in 2017, and as of 2022, the Air Force planned to procure at least 37 aircraft, replacing older models in the process. Ghostriders are based at Hurlburt Field, Florida, home of AFSOC, and are operated by elite units such as the 4th Special Operations Squadron.

This flying fortress continues the legacy of the AC-130 gunship family that began in Vietnam and has evolved through decades of combat experience. With its unmatched ability to deliver overwhelming firepower in support of U.S. forces, the AC-130J Ghostrider isn’t just an aircraft—it’s a mission multiplier, a guardian angel, and a symbol of dominance from the night sky.
